Dear Gideon,

You’ve been growing up fast. Recently you’ve started eating food: rice cereal, oatmeal cereal, bananas, and yesterday you tried butternut squash for the first time. In general you have enjoyed eating. When we are eating dinner you want one of us to hold you, and then you try to grab things that are on the table. When I don’t let you, you whine a little, and you wiggle around. You like being involved in what we are doing.

You can sit up now, and play very well. You do not know yet how to sit up on your own though. Mom and I have to sit you up. You fall over sometimes, usually because you are trying to look at someone behind you or to your side, and sometimes because Juliet gives you a hug and accidentally knocks you off balance.

Some of your favorite toys are the egg shakers we have—little rattles. You seem to like rattles generally. You put everything in your mouth to explore it.

You like to wake up early. Usually you wake up between 5 and 6am. Mostly closer to 5:15 or 5:30. That is a little too early for Mom. She sometimes gets you out of bed to play and then lays down on the couch to wake up slowly while you play with your bucket of toys in the living room. If I am awake then and not on my way to work yet, I will sometimes get you up so Mom can sleep in. You like to go to bed early too. It seems like most days you are tired and wanting to go to bed by 5:30. But we stretch you and keep you up a little bit so that you and Juliet can go to bed at the same time. You start getting ready for bed at 6:15, then you nurse, and you fall asleep usually before 7.

Love,
Dad
