4 months

Dear Gideon,

Happy 4 months! You are still the happiest baby and you have grown so much in the past month. Every time I take you somewhere and you see someone that knows you, they always comment on how grown up you look and that you now look like a baby and now like a newborn anymore. I never understood why people say they love the newborn stage because I love it when you get older and know how to do things, but now that you have outgrown that stage I can see why people miss it. You were the best newborn and so sweet. You are still a sweet baby but you have become more curious, active, and wanting to learn more and a little more dissatisfied with just sitting there (although you are still SO good.)

You have finally settled into a routine of eating and sleeping since last month you were disrupted from our vacation to visit your grandparents. You go to bed between 7:00 and 7:30 pm and you wake up twice in the night. You usually wake up the first time around 2:30 or 3:00 am and then you wake up between 5:00 or 6:00. I am thinking of weaning you from the middle of the night feeding and leaving the early morning feeding until you want to give it up. I want you to be able to only wake up once in the night before we move you into Juliet's room. You still sleep in the bassinet, which is getting small for you, but you still like it. You take 4 naps a day (I have been trying to get it down to three, but you don't nap very well). It is hardly your fault that you don't nap well because between being on the go every day and Juliet interrupting your sleep, it is hard to get you to nap for long. Hopefully the older you get, the better you will understand the routine. Lately Dad and I have put you to bed in our room and then wheel you out to the living room for the night. It helps me get a lot better sleep.

You are starting to eat every 2 and a half hours during the day. Yay!! You are going longer between feedings which is great!! You still eat very efficiently and never for very long at a time, but you are becoming more ok with going longer between feedings. I usually feed you at 5:00 am, 7:00 am, 9:30 am, 12 noon, 2:30 or 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm, 6:30 pm for bed time (and then during the night you eat one more time).

You love to play especially in the exersaucer and the high chair with the baby toys we have. You have started not liking the car seat as much because you want to get out and play. You don't mind sleeping in there though if you are tired. Your hair is growing in more and I comb it over for Sundays.

You wear size 6 month clothes still, but they are starting to get small on you. Soon we will move you up to 9 month clothes. You wear size 2 diapers, but you should start wearing size 3 soon (once we get through all of the size 2 diapers we bought).

The sounds that you make are very cute. You love cooing, laughing, and have started to talk more. You love to find your fingers and suck on them. You have started to give open-mouth kisses to all of us. You love it when we kiss you back. You love to look at Juliet. You give her such happy looks of adoration. She also likes to be with you and take care of you. She likes it when I feed you because then she gets "phone time" where she can watch little music videos of nursery rhymes.

You have started rolling over, which is fun to watch. I don't know if you realize what you are doing yet. You roll from your stomach to your back. Your dad has been trying for days to get it on video, but I don't know if we ever will. You always stop when we pull out the camera. You don't mind tummy time too much and you have started trying to pull your knees toward you in an effort to scoot yourself. We think that you will learn to crawl pretty quickly.

You love to look at people and you find them fascinating. We went to the State Fair as a family and the whole time you did not want to look at any of the animals, but you wanted to look at the people. We also went to a farm in Cedar Rapids and you still just wanted to look at all of the people. You especially love to look at Dad when he gets home and you have all of the smiles for him.

We all love you so much. Today Dad gave you a special father's blessing for the start of this next year and he blessed you to learn more, be healthy, and continue to be a light in our family. We are just so happy you are here with us. You make everyday better and I love watching you grow up.

Love,

Mom
