Dear Gideon,
You are getting closer and closer to your first birthday! You are growing up a lot already. You’re nursing three times a day now: just after you wake up in the morning, right before your afternoon nap, and right before you go to bed at night. You’ve been eating a lot of solid foods. You’ve been pretty good so far about trying and eating lots of different things. You eat almost all of what we eat for dinner. We haven’t given you anything with peanuts though. In addition to eating a lot of different kinds of food, you also went through a period of eating a large quantity of food. I think you may have been having a growth spurt. There were a couple weeks where it felt like we couldn’t get enough food for you. It hasn’t been that way lately, but then again maybe you only lost your appetite temporarily because you had a cold last week.
You are becoming more assertive lately. When Juliet takes a toy from you sometimes you crawl after her and try to take it back. You also try to take things from her. When we were at Costco yesterday, Juliet got a sample of mozzarella stick. She was holding it in her hand that was farthest from you, and you were leaning all the way across her, grunting, and trying to reach it. She thought it was funny, until she realized you were trying to take her food. You’ve also been more assertive in telling Mom and me what you need.
You like to pull toys off of shelves and clothes out of drawers. You also like to play with the board books in your room. You crawl very quickly now, and you are working on standing up and walking. You like to pull yourself up on everything—even things that aren’t very stable. You’ve fallen over a few times from pulling yourself up on the plastic folding chair we keep by the piano. You like walking with your walker or with someone holding your hand.
Some other things you’ve learned: You are starting to understand what Juliet, Mom, and I say to you. You’re also learning to clean up a little bit. You know how to put things in a box, so we usually ask you to clean up the plastic farm animals, which go in a little tub, or the play food, which goes in a little grocery basket.
You still smile easily and often. When you are excited about something you are holding you will often lift it up on top of your head. When you are in your high chair and are getting impatient (either for more food or to get down) you will lean forward then slam yourself backwards against the chair.
Love,
Dad
